With the increasing prevalence of coaching, therapists are often finding themselves in the position of distinguishing between therapy and coaching in both their clinical practice as well as their description of client services. This workshop will explore both the similarities and differences between coaching and therapy--clinically, legally, and ethically--while identifying specific ethical and legal pitfall and how to avoid them. Implications for clinical supervisors will also be discussed with regarding to the need for supervisors to be aware of and well-versed in the differences to be able to educate candidates on the distinction and potential legal and ethical pitfalls. Various codes of ethics, legal statues, and administrative regulations will be considered and explored as part of the complexities of this nuance.
